How to interpret a Washington criminal-record result

WATCH is useful only when its Washington scope matches the question. A record returned by the state system should be read as a Washington criminal-history product, not as proof that every court, arrest, or federal record in the country has been searched. If the goal is to review your own history before an application or correct an identity problem, keep the record source and search method with your notes so you can explain exactly what was checked.

Identity is the second issue. A name-based search can point to a record, but common names, spelling variants, and incomplete identifiers can create ambiguity. Compare date-of-birth information and other lawful identifiers supplied by the official process. If the result must be definitively tied to you, follow the fingerprint-based route described by the responsible agency rather than treating a name match as conclusive.

A matching name is not proof that every returned record belongs to the person you are researching. Compare date of birth and other permitted identifiers, and use fingerprint verification when the task requires a definitive self-record match.

    Check identifying details rather than relying on name alone. A candidate list needs comparison; Exact Match Available means a name/date-of-birth match, not fingerprint confirmation. DUPLICATE MATCH means multiple exact name and/or birth-date matches may exist. NO RECORD or NO EXACT MATCH FOUND means no matching conviction record for those criteria in the WSP database. Pending means WSP review is continuing; WATCH says results should post within 24–48 hours. Recheck the pending result before drawing a conclusion.

    Use FBI personal review only when you need FBI-held fingerprint-based history, not as a substitute for a Washington court file.

Context

When another Washington source is necessary

If the task shifts from criminal history to a particular prosecution, move to the court that handled that case. A repository result and a court file may use related event information but have different record purposes. That distinction matters when you need the wording of a judgment, a filing, or a disposition rather than a repository summary. Keep the WATCH result as one source in the research trail and document the court search separately.
